“The Portrait is Political” Opening on April 24th

We’re excited about the opening of “The Portrait is Political” this Wednesday, April 24th from 7-9 PM at the Gallery at BRIC House in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The exhibition will feature “Jasmine Blooms At Night,” a series of small scale paintings by Brooklyn-based artist Jaishri Abichandani portraying South Asian American feminists and activists in the local community who are making a large social impact.  And her series features a portrait of Sholay’s very own Ashu Rai, along with other friends in our community. Her subjects in the series are friends she has made or been inspired by during years of activism, “which includes being a student organizer during her college years in Queens, rallying for pro-choice causes in Washington, D.C., and founding arts group the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective in 1997.”

Jaishri has beautifully captured Sholay parties and our vibrant Desilicious crowd over the years in her lush photographs and we’re looking forward to seeing her new painting series.

If you miss the opening, you can still catch the exhibit which will be up until May 12th.
