Members of Sarbat—a London based social and support group for LGBT Sikhs—will be in New York in the beginning of November for discussions and social gatherings. Scheduled events include an introductory discussion about Sarbat and issues faced by LGBT Sikhs in the US & UK on November 1st and a walk on the Highline followed by brunch on November 2nd. Since the historic strike down of Penal Code 377 in 2009, we’ve seen Pride marches in India expand beyond Delhi (pictured above) and Mumbai to cities like Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai. News alert: men have sex with men in Pakistan! While the net is atwitter about Mobeen Azhar’s recent BBC article  which comes across as an exposé on the country’s burgeoning underground gay scene, this is old news for most of us gaysis. Underground parties, Grindr hookups, and  “marriages of convenience” aren’t unique to Pakistan and may only be a surprise to audiences who don’t read about Pakistan beyond the headlines.

As we mark Pakistan and India’s Independence Days, a group called  The 1947 Partition Archive expands its mission to collect oral histories of Partition. While there is no accurate count of lives lost at this tumultuous time, estimates are that up to 2 million died on both sides of the border and over 10 million people were uprooted.
