Queer Islamic Marriages in the UK
BBC News had a story last week about a British lesbian couple looking into having a “nikah”, or Islamic marriage, to solidify their relationship. The article notes that there is a increasingly visible voice within the Muslim community representing gay people with the emergence of British gay Muslim support groups such as Imaan and Safra Project. One of the key supporters is the American Imam, Daayiee Abdullah – who is also gay who has performed a numerous gay nikahs in America and has also advised gay British Muslim couples on how to perform the ceremony.
