More Questions Around the Death of Professor Siras
On Wednesday, Dr. Srinivas Ramachandra Siras, the 64-year-old chairman of the Modern Indian Languages department at Aligarh Muslim University in India, who was suspended and then reinstated by a court after being unknowingly videotaped having sex with another man, was found dead in his home.
His family members are now pushing for a probe to determine whether his death was a suicide or murder.
Professor Siras was in the news a few months ago when he was the victim of a sting operation, where he was filmed having consensual sex with another male and then suspended by the university. So far, it has been ruled a suicide by poison, although the police are pursuing other leads, including the possiblity he may have been blackmailed. Professor Siras was a highly respected Marathi poet and scholar who had one dream – to move to the US, the only place where he could be free to be gay, and teach the Marathi language.
