Don’t Go! Stay at Bolliday Holiday All Night! Thumka Thursdays: “Pardesi Pardesi”

I may sound like the Weather Grinch, but I don’t really care. It’s December 1st and it’s bloody hot out! WTF?! As much as I’d like to live the Bollygay Baadshah lifestyle, I need the weather to start feeling a little less like Bombay more like The Himalayas. We are in New York, the Rockefeller Tree has been lit up already and everywhere you go, you’re bombarded with Christmas music. #whereisthesnow ?!

When picking this week’s Thumka Thursday item song there was only one requirement: They had to look cold!

“Pardesi Pardesi Jana Nahin” from Raja Hindustani is a song that, as a gaysi-lette (that’s my new word for young gaysi), I remember dancing to in the confines of my stage –err–room. Looking back and understanding more about what draws me to music I know that it was the intense passion in the vocal performances, raw, emotional lyrics and layered percussion that got my (at the time) under developed, wanna-be thumka jutting.

Today I look at the song and can relish all of the baby gay simplicity, but I am also down with:

  • The drag queen style make up — Who painted the village ‘pagli’ like that!? I love me some intense kajal…even some guy liner…but let’s try a finer tip brush next time, sweety.
  • Johnny Lever’s awkward hip bump to the token khusri – Stereotypical and sexless? Yes. But at least that’s some representation of queer bodies in Bollywood.
  • Alcohol as the remedy for a broke heart – Remember: All those messes you see awkwardly gyrating and drunkenly flailingĀ  this weekend — don’t hate on them. They probably just got dumped and are numbing the pain…

While the rest of you are probably singing “Tu jaana nahin” to the warm weather, I was thrilled to see Karishma Kapoor shivering as the fog swirled around her and the tear-stained Aamir Khan (gotta love a man who’s not afraid to cry).

Come on matha-nature. Hook us up with some thandi-hawa so we can warm and loosen up after a couple of whiskey drinks at Sholay’s Bolliday Holiday party tomorrow night!
