It’s Time to Get DIRTY(ier) #Thumka Thursday
Have you noticed how EVERYTHING right now is super retro? And by retro I mean 80s-90s (Does it scare anyone else to think that kids today think of the 90s as old?) Along with the slap bracelets, neon, denim jackets and the resurgence of loose fitting men’s pants (thank god!), Bollywood too is all about the “old is gold” sentiment. Every other movie these days is a throwback to the last 30 years. Whether you’re watching a Khoya Khoya Chand, Action Replayy or most recently, Dirty Picture.
If you haven’t guessed what this week’s #Thumka Thursday is by now, you clearly are not following us on Facebook. Change that. We’ve been talking about this song for months!
The most Thumka-y song of 2011 is undoubtedly “Ooh La La.” Set in the 80s, Dirty Picture is the pseudo-bio pic of Silk Smita (played by Vidya Balan) – the South Indian Cinema’s retro version of Rakhi Sawant –but less plastic looking. What does that mean? She was shamelessly, unapologetically, brazenly open about her sexuality and a lush. In other words: a gay man’s icon.
The song itself is BRILLIANT. Shreya Ghosal’s innocence paired with Bappi Lahiri’s cradle robbing tenor is an amazing throwback to Bollywood disco. The catchy melody, breathy vocals and synthesized keyboard alaaps revive a love for 80s Bollywood sound. Music directors Vishal and Shekhar may have sampled the track. If it aint broke…
Vaibhavi Merchant’s choreography left me wanting more. Coming from a die-hard Vaibs fan, that’s hard for me to admit in print. While Vidya heaved her bosom fervently and bounced her thumka with josh, it was Naseeruddin Shah who stole the show. Not only was he surprisingly agile, he looked damn good. (I didn’t realize I was into silver foxes until just now. Or am I just looking for a sugar daddy?) The young-old Jodi showed intense sexual chemistry.
My favorite line in the song is “gira de apna pallu baar baar.” Isn’t that the HOTTEST thing a lover could say? He wants you to keep stripping for him because he finds you so desireable! It’s probably no surprise that my favorite moment in the song is when Vidya’s purple sequins sari pallu gira’s from her shoulder revealing her all-too-tight blouse.
All in all this song just makes you want to dance and luckily DJ Ashu came through as always at the last Sholay with the dhol remix of “Ooh La La.” I personally I thumka’d my ass off and watched as the more svelte boys gira’d their shirts and ascended to the box. Then I joined them (fully clothed).
If you haven’t seen Dirty Picture yet, it has GREAT reviews! Make sure you check it out in theaters!
