Indian-American Crowned Miss America—Predictably Racist Tweets Follow

While beauty contests may be so 20th century, desi New Yorkers shared a moment of brown pride when Nina Davuluri from New York was crowned the first Indian-American Miss America. She knocked out the judges and audience with a classical/Bollywood dance number and, upon winning, the aspiring physician noted “I’m so happy this organization has celebrated diversity, and, on this stage tonight, there was so much diversity…” Predictably but sadly, a barrage of racist tweets followed the pageant held in Atlantic City. Pathetic comments like “Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11.” and “Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you.” abounded. Look out haters, Bollywood dancing desis are taking over!
