The Nepotism Debate Continues

The Nepotism Debate Continues

The nepotisim debate took another turn one week later with Kangana Ranaut’s extremely thoughtful response  to Saif Ali Khan’s own open letter.   If you’ve been living under a rock all week, the debate began with Kangana’s appearance on “Koffee with Karan” earlier this year when she discussed nepotism in Bollywood.  Kangana told Johan that if she ever writes a biography, she will see to it that it will have a chapter on nepotism written by Karan Johar.  The debate was reignited last Saturday at the IFFA awards in New Jersey where Varun Dhawan and Saif Ali Khan both joined Karan onstage to joke about Kangana’s comments in reference to their own rise in Bollywood (thanks to their parents) before chanting “Nepotism Rocks”.   Varun took one more dig at Kangana:  “There was a song in your film… ‘Bole choodiyan, Bole Kangana.”  Johar then responded with ““Kangana naa hi bole toh acha hai… Kangana bahut bolti hai. (It’s better Kangana doesn’t say anything, she talks a lot.”)

Well, the three men, who all come from Bollywood dynasties, were then rightly ridiculed and criticized for their remarks to Kangana, who did not attend the awards show.  This episode then resulted in a week of clarifications and apologies by Johar and Khan and latest letter by Kangana, which is worth a read.

Also, from IFFA, we’re reading about “buyer’s remorse” from the show’s attendees who are now demanding refunds for false advertising.  This included the absence of Hollywood stars, including Matt Damon and Julia Roberts, who were promised as headliners, despite the very small fine print.  Other disappointments included short “lip-synced” musical acts and late starts, including a 12:45 am by AR Rahman.
